The Kent countryside seen from Weil’s window at Grosvenor Sanatorium, Ashford, where she died in August 1943.

‘I cannot have’, she finally wrote, ‘any direct or indirect or even any very indirect [!] connection with the French Resistance.’ ‘I am finished’, she added, ‘broken, beyond any possibility of mending, and that independent of Koch’s bacilli. The latter has only taken advantage of my lack of resistance . . . The object may perhaps . . . be only temporarily glued together in such a way as to function for a few more years’.47 The gluing together, however, would occupy a much briefer span of time. She was placed at first in Middlesex Hospital in London. She refused a private room. But she did ask continually to be transferred to the country, and made certain her little collection of books was packed for the journey: Plato, the Bhagavad Gita, St John of the Cross. At last, in mid-August, she was taken to Grosvenor Sanatorium, in bucolic Ashford, Kent. ‘What a beautiful room in which to die’, she said, on seeing her new accommodation.
